About a 50 percent of children under 3 years of age suffer from childhood anemia, a disease that is generally treated with a diet aimed at increasing the consumption of foods rich in iron, such as meat, and increasing its absorption by combining it with fruits rich in vitamin C, since for iron to be better absorbed, you need vitamin C in the same digestion.

Iron supplements are also indicated, under medical supervision, when anemia is not mild.

Childhood anemia is characterized by a decrease in the number of red blood cells in the blood, which are responsible for transfer oxygen to all the organs of the body, thanks to the hemoglobin they contain.

Hemoglobin is a very important protein for our body, as it is responsible for transporting the oxygen necessary for the proper functioning of all the tissues and organs of our body.

When the figure or content of the hemoglobin is lower than expected in a blood test, it means the child has anemia.

Its most common cause is a lack of iron, a mineral necessary for the formation of hemoglobin in the blood. Another common cause is often difficulty absorbing it.

Some diseases can also cause anemia in children. Childhood anemia is recognized by pale skin tone, tiredness and lack of energy in children. The child may also have a whitish mouth or tongue.

Anemia can be caused by different reasons:

1. Iron deficiency is the main cause of childhood anemia. A diet poor in foods rich in iron can cause anemia.

2. An intestinal parasitic disease It can also cause blood loss, when consumed by parasites.

3. Some diseases or infections, such as urinary tract infections, tuberculosis, malaria, tumors, typhoid fever, and leukemia, among others, can cause anemia.

4. An ingestion of whole cow's milk or other animals in children under 1 year can produce a loss of red blood cells, which would cause a periodic exit of red blood cells into the intestinal lumen and, over time, anemia.

5. A daily exposure to environmental pollutionl produced by factories of paints, dyes, batteries and metalworking workshops. These situations can lead to progressive lead poisoning of the body and cause severe anemia.

6. Some antibiotics they can cause anemia when used for long periods of time. For this reason, when the pediatrician prescribes an antibiotic for the baby, it is important to strictly follow their instructions regarding the dose and duration of treatment.

7. Deficiency in vitamin B12 it can also be a cause of anemia.

The latest research has revealed the close relationship between hemoglobin levels and brain function in children.

Iron is necessary for the neural connections, as well as for the functioning of neurotransmitters (chemical substances found in the brain and allow the transmission of information and electrical activity) .In the case of children suffering from anemia, this alteration or deficiency causes low intellectual performance, learning, decreased cognitive performance and, consequently, school failure.

On the other hand, children with anemia are less affectionate, less adapted to the environment and have more conduct disorders.
